Artist's Statement (2007)

Working with Anne Packard, as a graphic designer and publisher (Fields Publishing)…the “Anne Packard” coffee table book…she could feel my yearning to be get back to my paints and brushes. A year long of being exposed to Anne’s art while viewing and editing paintings for her book renewed my longing.

This past summer (2007) Anne invited me to her studio to paint with her. (She was still on crutches from recent hip surgery.)  I picked flowers from her garden and arranged them in a blue ceramic bowl. She sat at her easel, Gail “How can I help you…what do want”? she asked. “I want to work in a totally opposite way from which I was working. No more precise tight paintings.

As I started my 1st painting by applying the paint to the canvas...a pink peony was coming to life…Stop! You’ve made too much of a commitment. Use your biggest brush; block in all the shapes on your canvas. Less is more, capture the essence…say as little as possible, invite the viewer in…let them complete the painting.

Listening, learning, paying attention to Anne’s comments have transformed my tightly controlled precise art. Working with big canvas, big brushes has transformed my paintings into free explosions of expression with color, light, texture.

Anne has guided and inspired me. “Your paintings should speak with your own voice”, “paint paintings not pictures”, “let your painting sing” she reminds me.

I have unveiled my new voice, and my paintings are singing my new songs.

Good news....Since I wrote the above statement I received the exciting news that the “Anne Packard” book, published by Fields Publishing, was named as the winner in the Art category in the 21st Benjamin Franklin Awards from PMA, the Independent Book Publishers Association in Recognition of Excellence in Independent Publishing. The winners were announced May 31, 2007 at the awards ceremony in New York City at the conclusion of the PMA, “Publishing University” show.

In addition, I won 1st place for my oil painting “Field Flowers” at the Cape Cod Art Association Members Show (May-June 2007)

Artist's Statement (2009) CCMA - "GardenScapes & Landscapes"
In these uncertain times, nothing gives me more joy than to look down
at my palette, alive with colors telling me - - inviting me - -
challenging me. Patiently waiting for me to "Say something, Gail . "

My palette awaits me - colors full of energy. My canvas sometimes primed
with a color, sometimes pure white. My paint brush or palette knife in
hand. I start my journey.

Childhood memories and impressions from the past continue to inspire me:
my keen interest in colors that I experienced in my family's flower gardens,
walks through fields of wild flowers, and even the elderly lady (I even remember
her name, Mrs.Lovett.) who presented me with colorful bouquets on my birthdays.

I invite you, my viewers, to smell these blossoms, to feel the breeze and
sun that caress the petals, to hear the pollinating bees not seen in my
gardens, and to, of course, see the energy of color that interplays
among the paint and the canvas surface.

My "Fields of Flowers", my "Bouquets , " my "Sunflowers" celebrating life
and my series of "Paths" are invitations to the viewer to join me in my journey. If I
can bring the viewer into the painting and share a romp through a field
of wild flowers or a walk down a shady lane , I have recreated the
spirit of my childhood that I remember, imagine and frequent today.
These memories have become my paintings.

Quote from Anne Packard /Provincetown Artist -
"The glorious flower paintings of Gail Fields - so full of color - always delight me."
